IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PQRST METHOD TO ENHANCE THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION SKILL

ABSTRACT
This study is to describe the existing linguistic research in the State of Polytechnic of Medan program study civil engineering. The research aims to enhance the student’s ability in reading comprehension by implementing the PQRST method. Due to read as well as to comprehend a single text in foreign language not only need a linguistics competence of a language but also the knowledge of cognitive skills and a standard of intelligence strengths. The population of the research is the students of program study civil engineering in the second semester, academic year of 2011/2012 who has attended the subject of English for Engineering 2. The sample is 24 students of class 2-A. The method which is applied in the research is classroom-action research. The data is derived from the results of reading comprehension score test. Analysis of the data is processed by using paired samples T-test SPSS 19. The research results have found that 1) the preliminary of the students’ reading comprehension pre-test is 37.5% in the level D. This score test is prior to PQRST method applied, 2) After first cycle, the student’s reading comprehension has improved relatively significant as the method of PQRST has been implemented to the students, the students’ achievement test results 48.83% in the level C. 3) At the end of the cycles, the student’s reading comprehension post test has been improved significantly which most of them (70.83%) obtains grade B or it is categorized good; in other words the average score is 68.68.
